Sony LIV SEO Case Study – Overview

This Sony LIV SEO case study demonstrates how I approached organic visibility across a large OTT platform where SEO depended on far more than optimizing individual pages.

Sony LIV operates across a complex ecosystem of shows, movies, episodes, live sports, tournaments, match pages and other high-value entertainment content.

At this scale, search performance depends on multiple systems working together:

Crawlability → Rendering → Indexation → Structured Data → Content → Internal Linking → Page Experience → Search Intent

My role as SEO Manager was to help strengthen that system and translate SEO requirements into scalable improvements across content, technology and publishing workflows.

The Challenge

SEO for a large streaming platform creates a very different set of challenges from optimizing a conventional business website.

Sony LIV contained large numbers of dynamically generated and frequently changing pages across entertainment and sports.

The challenge was therefore not simply:

“How do we rank this page?”

The larger question was:

How do we create scalable search visibility across thousands of pages, templates and constantly changing content?

Several areas needed to work together effectively:

  • Search-engine crawling and indexation
  • JavaScript and server-side rendering
  • Structured data
  • Core Web Vitals
  • XML sitemaps
  • Internal linking
  • Page metadata
  • Sports landing pages
  • Search-intent coverage
  • Featured Snippets and People Also Ask opportunities
  • Publishing workflows
  • SEO quality assurance during releases

The scale made repeatable systems essential.

My Role

As SEO Manager, I owned end-to-end SEO across important Sony LIV content templates, including:

Shows • Movies • Episodes • Live Sports • Tournaments • Match Content

My role involved SEO strategy as well as coordination across multiple teams.

I worked with:

Product

to translate search requirements into platform improvements.

Engineering

to resolve technical SEO, rendering, structured-data and performance issues.

Publishing and Content

to improve discoverability, metadata, content structure and search coverage.

External SEO Agency Teams

to support execution, analysis and SEO activity at scale.

The objective was not simply to produce SEO recommendations.

It was to help turn those recommendations into changes that could operate reliably across a large digital product.

Technical SEO at Scale

One major part of the work involved strengthening the technical foundation supporting organic discovery.

On a large OTT platform, seemingly small template-level issues can affect thousands of URLs.

The focus therefore included areas such as:

  • Crawlability
  • Rendering
  • Indexation
  • XML sitemaps
  • Canonicalization
  • Template-level SEO
  • Page performance
  • Internal linking
  • Structured data
  • Release QA

Instead of repeatedly fixing individual URLs, I focused on identifying improvements that could be implemented at the template or system level.

That allowed SEO improvements to scale across larger groups of pages.

Improving Core Web Vitals

Page experience and performance were important parts of the technical SEO program.

I worked with Product and Engineering teams on template-level improvements and SEO QA processes designed to identify performance issues before and during releases.

This contributed to:

45.5% Improvement in Core Web Vitals

The result demonstrated why performance optimization on a large platform cannot be treated only as an SEO checklist item.

It requires coordination between:

SEO + Product + Engineering + Release QA

Structured Data and Rich Results

Another major area of focus was helping search engines better understand Sony LIV’s content.

The platform contained several types of content requiring different structured-data implementations.

I worked across schema types including:

  • VideoObject
  • TVSeries
  • TVEpisode
  • Movie
  • SportsEvent
  • Breadcrumb
  • FAQ
  • Paywall / Subscription markup

Particular attention was given to ensuring that structured data was correctly rendered and available to search engines.

The implementation included server-side rendered JSON-LD where appropriate and validation as part of SEO QA.

This work contributed to:

+98% Rich-Results Coverage

Structured data was not treated as a way to simply “get a green validation result.”

The purpose was to help search engines understand the relationship between Sony LIV’s content, entities and page types more clearly.

Improving Sports Search Visibility

Live sports creates highly competitive and time-sensitive search demand.

Search behavior can change rapidly around:

  • Tournaments
  • Teams
  • Matches
  • Players
  • Schedules
  • Streaming queries
  • Results
  • Event-related questions

I analyzed search demand and SERP opportunities around important sports content and worked on improving landing pages accordingly.

The strategy included:

  • Metadata optimization
  • Search-intent analysis
  • People Also Ask opportunities
  • Featured Snippet opportunities
  • FAQ-style answer content
  • Internal linking
  • Landing-page optimization

The focus was not simply on inserting more keywords.

It was about making pages more useful and relevant to the questions users were already asking.

The Result

The sports optimization work contributed to:

+22% Organic Clicks

on key sports landing pages.

CTR on important sports queries also improved by:

+2.3 Percentage Points

These improvements demonstrated how search-intent analysis, page optimization and SERP-feature targeting could strengthen discovery even in highly competitive sports search results.

Improving Indexation and Discovery

Large platforms can create significant indexation complexity.

XML sitemaps and indexing workflows therefore formed another important part of the SEO program.

I worked on improving:

  • Sitemap organization
  • URL discovery
  • Search-engine indexation
  • Internal linking
  • Canonical destination signals

The goal was to help search engines discover and prioritize important content more efficiently.

This was especially important for entertainment and sports content where relevance can be strongly affected by timing.

Preparing Content for AI Search

As search evolved beyond traditional blue-link results, I also began working on approaches designed to make content easier for both search engines and AI systems to understand and reference.

This included:

  • Clear answer blocks
  • FAQ-style content
  • Entity-focused information
  • Internal linking toward canonical answers
  • Citation-ready content structures

The principle was straightforward:

Important information should be easy to find, understand and reference — whether the discovery system is traditional search or an AI-driven interface.

The SEO Operating Model

The work evolved into a repeatable process:

Search & Performance Data

↓

Identify Visibility Gaps

↓

Diagnose Technical or Content Causes

↓

Prioritize by Impact

↓

Work With Product, Engineering & Content

↓

Implement at Template or Page Level

↓

SEO QA

↓

Measure Search Performance

↓

Refine

This approach helped move SEO away from isolated fixes and toward an ongoing visibility system.

Business Impact

The value of the work went beyond individual SEO metrics.

Improved technical foundations meant more content could be discovered reliably.

Better structured data helped search engines understand Sony LIV’s content more clearly.

Improved Core Web Vitals strengthened page experience.

Better sports optimization helped Sony LIV capture more high-intent search demand.

Stronger indexing and internal linking helped important content become easier for search engines to find.

Together, these improvements supported a broader objective:

Make Sony LIV’s content easier to discover when audiences were actively looking for it.

What This Project Demonstrates

Enterprise SEO Requires Systems

Large websites cannot rely on manually optimizing individual pages.

SEO needs to work through templates, technology, workflows and repeatable standards.

Technical SEO Must Connect With Business Priorities

Not every technical issue deserves equal attention.

The priority should be fixes that materially improve discovery, performance or user experience.

SEO Is Cross-Functional

Many of the most valuable improvements require collaboration between SEO, engineering, product, publishing and content teams.

Structured Data Needs Quality Control

Schema implementation is only valuable when it accurately represents the page and remains technically reliable across releases.

Search Intent Matters Even at Enterprise Scale

Technical foundations create discoverability, but content still needs to answer what users are actually searching for.

How I Apply This Experience Today

Most small and medium businesses do not have Sony LIV’s technical complexity.

But they frequently have the same underlying problem on a smaller scale.

Their website, SEO, content, technical setup and digital marketing may all exist, but they are not operating as one connected visibility system.

Today, I apply the same core thinking:

Diagnose the system → identify the highest-impact gaps → prioritize → implement → measure → improve.

The scale changes.

The principle does not.
